This Outing’s Features
The first thing to meet a visitor’s eye in late May is the riot of colourful wildflowers that cloak the landscape. Prairie Smoke and Indian Paintbrush thrive here as do a myriad of other blossoms. The big draw for birders is the chance to observe the endangered Loggerhead Shrike but warblers and uncommon sparrows also make Carden their summer home. Upland Sandpipers Bobolinks, Bluebirds and Meadowlarks do too.

Carden Alvar
The Carden Plains are a naturalist’s paradise right here in Ontario. Starting from the ground up there is literally something for everyone. The very Earth beneath our feet, a limestone alvar represents a scarce habitat with only a handful of examples worldwide. The limestone bedrock and thin soils provides home for a variety plants and animals that are unlikely to be found elsewhere in the province.
